NBA Season Hip Hop Awards (2013): Part 1

This is a new concept that I came up with. I honestly think there should be two chances for artist to win awards, the first half of the year and the second half. Then shortly after this idea I realized there are sports that also function in the first half and second half of the year. So to make things relate a little more I am giving out the awards from each sport and presenting them to rap artist with a short explanation of how the award relates to the artist and why they won it...so here we go!!!!

MVP: Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick this year has been on fire from features to creating what most have called a "classic album". Even his radio freestyles have DJ's going crazy and excited to have him on the set. His rise to fame has also brought more attention to TDE as a whole and the best part is he balances having global appeal while being humble and a great lyricist.

Defensive Player of the Year: Lupe Fiasco

Chicago as a whole has been under fire from the mediocre raps of King L and Chief Keef, as well as "Yeezus" being defined as anything but a hip hop album, but guess who has been around to defend the lyricism and forward thinking of the Chi...Lupe Fiasco, once questioned if he would be making Lasers Pt. 2 with Food & Liquor 2 he reached out and got more creative and hip hop influenced production as well as speaking on things that mattered in the the world. "Audubon Ballroom", "Lamborghini Angels", and even "Jonylah Forever" have shown Lupe attempting to defend his city, culture, and music genre, and as we all know defense wins games. So be prepared for the Chi-town native to make a larger influence soon.

Sixth Man of the Year" Pharrell and Big KRIT (co-winner)

These two artist have been putting in WORK!!!!! Neither artist has released a solo album, but both are everywhere. KRIT has been producing music for most underground or southern mainstream this year and has also been killing all the tracks he has been featured on. Have you not heard "1 Train"? Pharrell will be up for grammy's this year with the work he has done. Working with the likes of Robin Thicke, Jay-Z, Timbaland, The-Dream, Nelly and even Daft Punk. The man is truly everywhere these days, and for all his hard work he is the initial winner of this award, but also Big KRIT deserves recognition for holding down the underground.

Most Improved: Mac Miller

"He was Easy Mac with the cheesy raps...who the f*** is Mac Miller???" Loaded Lux questions on "Red Dot Music". Honestly after Blue Slide Park he was left with plenty of time to think it over. Nearly no one was happy about this album...I even think Mac failed to see his own potential. The Most Dope rapper rebounded by doing something most artist could definitely falling in the footsteps from, LISTENING TO HIS FANS. His fans were asking for Mac to grow lyrically and his fans also wanted more insight on life as Mac Miller the person and not just the artist, then comes Macadellic, which was received as a decent mixtape. But not too much later he releases "Watching Movies with the Sound Off', which has been acclaimed as not only his best work, but has shown in his first week sales that the Rostrum artist is making moves in the write direction, and honestly he seems happier with his own music. Good work, now you are no longer Easy Mac with the cheesy raps.

Rookie of the Year: Macklemore
This man alone nearly epitomizes rookie performaces. "Thrift Shop" 7x platinum,  "Can't Hold Us" 3x platinum, his album The Heist, raved by critics as one of the most creative hip hop albums in years with deep subject matter and great storytelling lyricism. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are a duo that can't be touched, and without a major label have become possibly the most known independent artist ever. Hopefully his sophomore year goes just as well.

D-League MVP: Killer Mike and (co-MVP) XV

Now to some this may seem as an insult or pitty award, but trust me it is far from it. This is recognition for those who are known, have a small fan base, and don't really have a big label backing them. Killer Mike released one of the best albums last year with R.A.P. Music without a major label and was basically swept under the rug, XV the Co-MVP, has been working hard for years. After being cheated out of the XXL freshman list twice and ignored by most major labels he has been able to impress music reviewers with his mixtapes such as Zero Heroes (working with Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole) and Popular Culture. Hopefully there will be someone to pick up these artist to get away from the D-league ranks. People such as these two should be heard, they are creative, lyrical, and definitely worth more than a 100,000 - 250,000 fan base.

Team Champions: Roc Nation

This label has been going on strong for years now, and with artist such as Beyonce, Rita Ora, Rhianna, J. Cole, and Wale (management still counts), there are a slew of platinum records to hand out. This is what a label is supposed to be like a diverse group of talented artist each playing their part to make the label stronger. Things can only get better with Born Sinner, The Gifted, and Magna Carta Holy Grail finally being released.

Coach of the Year: Jay-Z
After the last award I just gave out...I'm sure most of you called it. Amazing rapper, great label executive, genius businessman, new found sports agent, and all around hustler. Jay-Z is the man most artist inspire to be, and what even some businessmen envy. He is keen to spotting out talent (all of Roc Nation) even with those who didn't sign to his label (Joey Bada$$). I'm also pretty sure he advised J. Cole to push up the date for Born Sinner as well. Even his daughter got a million dollar endorsement with 1-800-flowers for her name. This is a coach that simply knows how to win...

Well that concludes all the awards for the first half of the year folks. Love, like it, or hate it let me know how you feel!!!
